Dans la ligne d'un certain nombre de philosophes du XX e sicle comme Brentano ou Moore, Hurka dfinit la vertu comme un bien intrinsque, mme si son effet positif dpend aussi du bien et du mal extrieur l'individu.Mme s'il affirme dans sa prface que peu d'ides philosophiques sont nouvelles, et c'est certainement vrai des ides de ce livre (p.VII), 1'ouvrage de Hurka est remarquablement original par la manire dont il dfinit la vertu, recourant parfois un formalisme logique et mathmatique.L'auteur se dmarque clairement de l'thique de la vertu dans la tradition aristotlicienne. son avis, les vertus peuvent s'intgrer aussi bien dans une vision consquentialiste que dans une vision dontologique.Il propose mme une conception intermdiaire de la vertu entre, d'une part, ces deux visions, pour lesquelles la notion de vertu a un rle secondaire , et, d'autre part, l'thique de la vertu qui lui donne un rle prpondrant. Le but de ce livre est de dvelopper un statut de la vertu intermdiaire entre ces extrmes (p.3).Du fait de son caractre ardu, le livre s'adresse principalement aux spcialistes.Georges CHAPOUTHIER.
