Abstract
Il testo indaga la formazione dell’indigenità contemporanea in Canada, osservata attraverso le dinamiche memoriali e patrimoniali connesse al sistema delle Residential Schools (RS). L’autrice evidenzia come la categoria di «paradigma vittimario », connessa all’opera di Fassin e Rechtman, abbia orientato la costruzione di una «comunità di sofferenza» indigena, legittimata dal riconoscimento del trauma storico legato alle RS. In tale prospettiva, la Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2008-2015) ha svolto un ruolo cruciale nella produzione di testimonianze, rapporti e raccomandazioni, che hanno dato luogo a risarcimenti economici e pratiche di memorializzazione. La visita di Papa Francesco nel 2022 rappresenta, infine, un momento di consacrazione simbolica del riconoscimento delle popolazioni indigene come vittime di genocidio culturale, aprendo al contempo la strada a processi di riconciliazione e rielaborazione storica. I discorsi patrimoniali attuali, con pratiche di indigenizzazione e decolonizzazione, vanno letti nell’ambito di questa cornice più ampia. The text investigates the formation of contemporary Indigeneity in Canada, observed through the memorial and heritage dynamics connected to the Residential Schools system. The author highlights how the category of the «victimhood paradigm» related to the work of Fassin and Rechtman, has shaped the construction of an Indigenous «community of suffering», legitimized by the recognition of the historical trauma linked to the RS system. Within this framework, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2008-2015) played a crucial role in producing testimonies, reports, and recommendations, which gave rise to financial compensation and practices of memorialization. Pope Francis’ 2022 visit ultimately represents a symbolic moment of consecration of Indigenous peoples as victims of cultural genocide, while at the same time opening the path to processes of reconciliation and historical re-elaboration. Current heritage discourses, through indigenization and decolonization practices, must be interpreted within this broader framework.
