Abstract
Animal welfare, particularly in confined animals, has been a central topic in recent decades due to the negative effects of restricted environments and lack of environmental stimulation. In horses, stereotypies are often associated with confinement and social isolation. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of stereotypies in horses kept in training centers for the sport of vaquejada in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Fifty Quarter Horse equines, of both sexes and aged 8.45 ± 3.38 years, were evaluated, housed in four equestrian training centers under different management conditions. Behavioral analysis included interviews with caretakers and ethological observations. Clinical data were supplemented with a history of diseases that occurred in the past year. Although no statistically significant differences were found between groups, the frequency of stereotypical behaviors reflects inadequate management conditions, suggesting the need for environmental and social enrichment strategies to promote the welfare of these animals.
