El capítulo investiga la situación de la interpretación en la modalidad de interpretación en los servicios públicos, especialmente el ámbito médico y social. En esta modalidad, es muy habitual que las personas usuarias del servicio sean inmigrantes de distintas lenguas maternas. Partiendo de una investigación directa sobre el terreno en Quebec, Canadá, se compara la situación de la citada modalidad de interpretación en esa región y en Andalucía. El análisis de la situación en Quebec permite comprobar que la existencia de un banco de intérpretes en ámbito médico y social, supone el reconocimiento de un derecho a la traducción e interpretación, permite a los propios usuarios y usuarias ejercer de intérpretes con una correcta formación previa y supone una mejor organización del servicio de interpretación, apoyado y financiado desde la Administración canadiense. El objetivo final de la investigación es proponer la creación de una estructura comparable en la Comunidad Autónoma andaluza, igualmente respaldada con ayuda de la Administración pública.
