Comment Joseph Raphson conçoit-il l’espace, dans son rapport à la détermination newtonienne de l’espace absolu ? La position radicale de Raphson, qui fait de l’espace un attribut stricto sensu de Dieu, ne permet guère d’éclairer les enjeux théologiques de la position de Newton. D’une part, Raphson n’appartenait pas réellement au cercle des newtoniens. D’autre part, et surtout, il pousse à ses limites la notion d’espace absolu en en faisant une entité spirituelle qui est en même temps ce que les corps ont de plus intime. Il s’engage ainsi dans une métaphysique que Newton refuse.
