La profession de bibliothécaire repose sur des codes d’éthique définissant des valeurs telles que la liberté intellectuelle et la justice sociale, deux principes pouvant entrer en conflit entre eux ou avec les valeurs personnelles des bibliothécaires. Leur articulation devient d’autant plus complexe dans un contexte où les préoccupations liées à l’équité, la diversité, l’inclusion et la justice sociale (ÉDIJS) prennent de l’ampleur, tout comme les controverses entourant la liberté intellectuelle en Amérique du Nord. Alors que cette question fait l’objet d’une littérature grandissante aux États-Unis, elle reste peu explorée au Québec. Comment les bibliothèques publiques au Québec définissent-elles ces deux principes et comment perçoivent-elles leurs relations ? Quelles tensions éthiques rencontrent-elles dans leur pratique ? Quelles stratégies peuvent être adoptées ? Cet article explore la diversité des positions adoptées, du maintien d’une liberté intellectuelle absolue à des approches critiques, ancrées dans la justice sociale. Il expose les tensions vécues, particulièrement autour des événements et des collections en bibliothèque publique. S’appuyant sur une revue de la littérature, l’analyse de la documentation institutionnelle et médiatique et une entrevue de groupe avec des bibliothécaires québécoises, l’étude propose des réflexions et des recommandations pour nourrir les débats professionnels et académiques au Québec.
