Cet article cherche à repositionner le rôle argumentatif que joue le concept d’armée industrielle de réserve (AIR) dans la théorie de l’accumulation chez Marx. Ce dernier considère l’AIR comme une partie constitutive de la loi générale de l’accumulation. La grande originalité de Marx est d’exposer l’intégration structurelle des phénomènes de surpopulation aux impératifs de l’accumulation. L’AIR n’est pas qu’un résultat, mais aussi une condition de possibilité de l’accumulation en général, en permettant notamment de réguler les salaires, dans une combinatoire avec les autres paramètres de l’exploitation. Notre lecture de Marx conçoit donc la formation d’une surpopulation ouvrière comme un processus dynamique qui est lié à des stratégies d’accumulation historiquement situées, ce que l’auteur du Capital appelait la « subsomption formelle » et la « subsomption réelle ». Marx est néanmoins loin de posséder une vision économiciste de l’AIR. Lorsque le degré de surpopulation est incapable de s’autoréguler, des moyens politiques et « extra-économiques » peuvent être mobilisés pour limiter la mobilité du travail ou forcer l’intégration de nouvelles populations dans le bassin du prolétariat.
