Abstract
Ce texte remet en question le récit d’une amitié exemplaire entre Mi’kmaq et Acadiens, du début de l’Acadie française au Grand Dérangement. En croisant historiographie acadienne et perspectives autochtones récentes, il montre que cette vision harmonieuse relève plus d’une construction de la mémoire populaire que d’une réalité historique. Trois périodes sous forme de questions sont ainsi étudiées : 1) Une rencontre heureuse? 2) Plus d’un siècle de vie harmonieuse? 3) Le Grand Dérangement : qui aide qui? Si les débuts furent marqués par la coopération et l’alliance politique, les sources révèlent ensuite une distance croissante : les Acadiens, sédentaires et agricoles, se sont peu métissés avec les Mi’kmaq, demeurés nomades et alliés à la France. Durant la Déportation, rien n’indique un refuge massif offert aux Acadiens ; les deux peuples ont plutôt connu des trajectoires parallèles, parfois concurrentes. Il s’agit de dépasser le mythe de « l’heureux mariage » pour restituer une histoire de coexistence fragile, fondée sur des intérêts souvent divergents.
