Abstract
Abstract The emergence of university physics research in Canada in the 1920s was closely linked to the emergence and development of on-site workshops staffed by skilled scientific instrument makers to make instruments for research. Social and political changes in the First World War triggered increased government and societal interest in research. Canadian proponents of research recognized that on-site workshops and highly skilled scientific instrument makers were a crucial component of competitive research programs and sought to acquire these by developing department workshops and ‘importing’ European makers with the necessary experience. Using Queen’s University’s physics’ department as a case study and featuring surviving material objects that were produced in university workshops across Canada, this paper examines the roles of onsite workshops and unearths the contributions of instrument makers in Canadian research in the interwar period.
