Abstract
The Social Network of Bulgarian Secular Schools in the 1860s and 1870s Revival schools and other educational institutions are subject of systematic studies by a significant group of Bulgarian scholars throughout the twentieth century and over the last decade. The numerous scientific and documentary texts, related to this topic, focus my research intuitions to the perception of schools which functioned throughout the Bulgarian territories of the Ottoman Empire during third quarter of the nineteenth century as a network. This network included nearly 2000 local institutions (mainly primary and class schools) – parts of a strong educational system built with management efforts, intellectual energy, and material investments of Bulgarian teachers, other intellectuals, and community leaders. The thesis of two consolidation levels of the chain of Bulgarian secular schools is exposed is the text. The first level was local. It is related to so-called main municipalities who ruled schools throughout their region with a strict administrative hierarchy. The local hierarchy in relationship between individual schools and main municipality had different vertical dimensions – staffing, financial, and administrative. This pattern of relations boosted national educational development in a strong and productive manner during two last decades prior to the Liberation (1878-1879). Within the boundaries of the whole nation the chain Bulgarian schools had a markedly horizontal appearance. This model is a result of lack of national state – an institution with real power for imposing a universal model within its entire territory. Horizontal links were established and maintained by the mobility of teachers. They were strengthened through intensive interpersonal contacts in teaching community and through the active exchange of information on the pages of the Revival newspapers and magazines. Within this two coexisting school networks (vertical at local level and horizontal at national level) Bulgarian educational institutions got the chance to set out successfully before official governmental establishment. Thus the school system became the widest effective component of the modern Bulgarian proto-state structures as whole.
