Het vakgebied ‘wind engineering’ zoals dat thans bestaat, is begonnen toen in verschillende landen in begin jaren 1960 de windbelasting en de respons van gebouwen werd onderzocht. Baanbrekende principes werden met name door Alan Davenport en collega’s in Canada geformuleerd. Sindsdien zijn op de toen gelegde fundamenten wereldwijd bijdragen geleverd aan het begrijpen van en het in ontwerpregels vastleggen van de windeffecten op gebouwen.In deze bijdrage wordt ingegaan op de huidige stand van zaken als het gaat om de kennis die de afgelopen 50 jaren is vergaard op het gebied van de windbelasting en de toepassing van die kennis in de bouwpraktijk. In het artikel is ervoor gekozen als uitgangspunt de praktijk te kiezen. Dit heeft vooral betrekking op de werkzaamheden van constructeurs, maar is ook van belang voor de toeleveranciers van dak- en gevelbekledingen. Achtereenvolgens komt de rol aan de orde van:-de normbladen-windtunnelonderzoek-ware grootte experimenten-de universiteiten.In dit artikel wordt rond die vier rollen geschetst hoe de stand van zaken is, wat de bouwpraktijk er mee moet en doet, en welke ontwikkelingen er thans zijn die binnen afzienbare tijd toepassing moeten vinden
