Abstract
Introducción: Las investigaciones han demostrado que existe una relación bidireccional entre diabetes y enfermedad periodontal llegando a concluir que la mala salud bucal puede empeorar el control glucémico. Por eso, mantener una higiene oral adecuada es fundamental en el tratamiento de la diabetes. Pese a esto, se conoce poco sobre el conocimiento de los pacientes acerca de la relación entre ambas enfermedades. Objetivo: El propósito de este estudio es evaluar el nivel de conocimiento sobre salud periodontal, diabetes y su relación bidireccional, en pacientes diabéticos tipo II. Materiales y métodos: Se empleará un diseño descriptivo, transversal y prospectivo, donde se aplicará un cuestionario de elaboración propia, validado por juicio de expertos. La población estará constituida por pacientes mayores de 30 años atendidos en el Hospital Nacional Adolfo Guevara Velazco atendidos en el servicio de endocrinología. El tamaño de la muestra se calculó con EPIDAT 4.0, con un mínimo de 382 participantes. El análisis estadístico incluirá estadística descriptiva y pruebas comparativas (Chi-cuadrado, ANOVA o Kruskal-Wallis), con un nivel de significación de p < 0,05.Conclusiones: El estudio busca evidenciar el nivel de conocimiento de los pacientes con diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus tipo II, sobre la salud periodontal, para así instruir acerca de hábitos de autocuidado y orientar intervenciones educativas y políticas públicas en salud bucal.
