La zona de estudio se encuentra ubicada sobre el sistema Andino Colombiano, más exactamente, en la zona este de la cordillera central a la altura del departamento de Antioquia (Colombia) y aledaña al RPP 140 o título minero perteneciente a la empresa Gran Colombia Gold corp. Geológicamente la zona, conocida como distrito Segovia-Remedios, está constituida por rocas ígneas (batolito de Segovia) y metamórficas del complejo metamórfico Cajamarca, sedimentitas de Segovia y Neis de San Lucas, actualmente considerados parte de los terrenos Tahamí (occidente) y Chibcha (oriental) (Restrepo & Toussaint, 1988). El batolito de Segovia de edad Jurásica (Feininger, et al., 1972), posee una zona de alteración considerable (saprolito), variando en espesores de 5 hasta 45 metros. La fisiografía de la zona puede dividirse según sus características en 3 unidades en las que es posible la identificación de relieves montañosos, de colina y finalmente otros correspondientes a planicies aluviales. En este trabajo se realiza la caracterización hidrogeológica del batolito. Si bien es solo una unidad geológica, se separa debidamente en dos unidades hidrogeológicas teniendo en cuenta la zona de alteración (saprolito) y la roca sin alterar; en ambas la porosidad presente es de carácter secundario (fracturamiento). La calidad del agua en esta cuenca no es buena, puesto que actualmente su cauce principal (quebrada La Cianurada) se encuentra catalogada como la quebrada más contaminada a nivel mundial por efectos de vertimiento de cianuro y mercurio, asociado esto a las labores de extracción minera informal que se realiza en las zonas aledañas a los efluentes de la quebrada. Se presentan datos publicados por la corporación autónoma de Antioquia (CORANTIOQUIA) referentes a oxígeno disuelto, cianuro total, coliformes fecales y mercurio total.
