Abstract
Sosyolojik, ekonomik, kültürel bir olgu olarak, işlev, biçim ve estetik birliği içerisinde kent denilen, kozmopolit bir yapılaşma oluşmuştur. Her dönemin yaşama biçimine göre şekillenen kentlerinde, sanat da buna paralel bir gelişme göstermiş ve birçok sanat eseri üretilmiştir. Kentlerin oluşum süreçlerinde, mimari ile birlikte düşünülen heykel sanatı da önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Kentlerin bir dokusu, bir rengi vardır. Kent mekanlarının düzenlenmesinde heykel, kente olumlu katkılar sağlayan ve bulunduğu mekanı görsel açıdan da farklı bir konuma dönüştüren bir sanat nesnesidir. Mersin kentinde, tarih öncesi çeşitli kültürlere ait heykellerin büyük bir kısmı Mersin Müzesinde bulunmaktadır. Günümüzde ise; Kamusal açık alanlarda, Atatürk ve Türk büyüklerini temsil eden anıtlar, tarihi kahramanları yansıtan figürler yer almaktadır. Ayrıca, Mersin Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi ve Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi tarafından 2000 yılından bu yana organize edilen Uluslararası Hüseyin Gezer Taş Heykel Sempozyumu düzenlenmiştir. Bu sempozyumla, Ülkemizin ve Mersin kentinin sanat yoluyla uluslararası platformda daha çok tanınması sağlanmıştır. Şimdiye kadar 13 kez düzenlenen bu sempozyumda Türk ve yabancı sanatçılar tarafından yapılan yaklaşık toplam 150 adet mermer heykel, adeta bir açık hava müzesi oluştururcasına halen kentin çeşitli yerlerinde sergilenmektedir.
