Parsing Through Paradox: Transdisciplinary Constructions of Mexicanidad in the Works of Martín Luis Guzmán
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This dissertation delves into the paradoxical nature of the works, the persona, and the reception of one of the most renowned Mexican writers of the 20th century: Martín Luis Guzmán. In my project, I view the tensions between the legacy of Guzmán’s writings and his personal character, as well as the subsequent receptions of both the man and his works, as ones accessible through the intertwined hermeneutical realms of the ideological and the aesthetic. Employing Basarab Nicolescu’s theory of transdisciplinarity to navigate the relationship between ideo-aesthetics, my aim is to explore the links between the atemporal artistry of Guzmán’s works and the particularities of the socio-political conditions in which these were produced. Specifically, I focus on the texts written during the author’s two exilic periods (1915-1920 and 1924-1936), beginning with La querella de México (1915) and ending with El águila y la serpiente (1928) and La sombra del caudillo (1929). Not only are these works foundational to Guzmán’s own writing career, but they also tackle the lingering preoccupation that defined the Mexican (post-)revolutionary period: what is Mexicanidad and what constitutes lo mexicano? Through a transdisciplinary reading, I demonstrate how Guzmán’s use of distinct literary elements such as symbolism, genre, narration, and themes acquire an ideo-aesthetic function that locates questions of national character within identifiable ideological milieus while simultaneously dis-locating them to hermeneutically ambiguous aesthetic spaces.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
