Engagements with life: Restorying suicide with young women and femmes experiencing housing injustice

Abstract
Suicide among young women and femmes experiencing houselessness is a startling public health issue in Canada but their experiences are often hidden. This dissertation wanted to better understand the ecological dimensions that contribute to suicidal distress beyond individual notions of risk. This dissertation sought to answer three research questions: 1. What are the ecological themes of distress among young women and femmes experiencing suicidality and housing injustice (e.g., social, political, cultural, environmental, structural)?; 2. What are their mental health needs, including but not limited to suicidality?; and, 3. What are the survival and resistance strategies this population engages in to support their wellness and engage with life? To answer these questions, a two-study design was employed using a methodology of social constructionism. To answer questions one and two, a narrative inquiry guided by a life history approach was conducted. The results from the analysis of narratives yielded a within participant analysis that details ten life histories. An across participant analysis was also conducted and yielded three meta-themes that organized eight themes. The themes include: 1. Violations of Autonomy and Self-Determination; 2. Challenges in Critical Relationships; 3. Early Childhood Experiences of Instability; 4. Organized Abandonment and Other Normed Chaos; 5. Tacit and Felt Knowledge About Danger; 6. Theorizations on Self-Harm and Suicide; 7. Theorizations About Good Living and a Caring World; and 8. Perspectives on Mental Health Needs. To answer question three, an art-based research study was conducted, and a zine was created. Five themes were generated through a reflexive thematic analysis. The themes are: 1. Affective and Psychological Strategies of Resistance; 2. Survival Strategies and Behaviours to Ensure Material Survival; 3. Theorizations About Good Living; 4. Organized Abandonment and Other Normed Chaos; and 5. Importance of Human Connection, Solidarity, and Radical Care. Both studies are discussed as a letter dedicated to participants. Recommendations are made in the areas of clinical practice, public health policy, and future research. A final chapter of researcher reflections is offered and is written as a deputation to Toronto City Hall.
