Abstract
This research explores the relationship between temporalities of work and religion through the case studies of observant Jewish and Muslim workers in the high-tech industry. It is based on fieldwork and 80 interviews in the tech centers of Tel Aviv, Israel, and Toronto, Canada, as well as fieldwork at a Tel Aviv-based international tech company. The starting point for this work is the reformulation of devotion to work in tech workplaces: a common understanding of dedication to work as a matter of personal motivation and self-realization, supported by ideologies of self-management and individual freedom. This logic is promoted in the realm of tech “ecosystems,” a term used to describe the global connectivity of tech centers, which blurs the boundaries of the workplace and depicts the tech industry as a field across which individual workers move. Based on these ideas of personal devotion and the global spread of tech corporations, this dissertation considers the growing legitimacy and even sponsoring of religious activities in the workplace. I argue that this accommodation shapes a “religion of guests” since it allows religious devotion as a personal preference, but limits religious practices and ideas that cross the guest position realm and relate to the broader public sphere of the workplace.This study also examines how the revolutionized concept of time in the tech industry, which is organized around tasks rather than strict work hours, promotes individual preferences as to when work is done. It is materialized and globally promoted through new time tools created within the industry, such as task management software or the digital calendar. Tech’s decentralization of time is pertinent to the religious temporalities of the Muslim and Jewish tech workers studied, who navigate their religious obligations alongside work commitments. In doing so, they craft a personal temporal hierarchy that blends collective religious rhythms with work demands. In the conclusion, I explore further research directions, in particular the relationship between time and sovereignty in global corporations.
