Abstract
The purpose of this study is to uncover how discourse produced by politicians, state officials and media actors through the media coverage of the George Floyd protests functioned to produce dominant knowledges of the protests. The study examines how these dominant knowledges worked to legitimize the state, policing, and technologies of governance. This study will also examine how the emphasis on violence in protests that challenge the state and anti-Blackness reproduces ideologies of non-violence which serve to delegitimize the tactics taken by protestors and construct entire protest movements through frames of violence. This study utilized Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), to study articles, videos and opinion pieces from corporate partisan media organizations CNN and Fox News. The research engaged a conceptual framework that brought together Critical Pedagogy, Black Radical Thought, Black Geographies, and Abolition theory to analyze the media pieces. Together, this conceptual framework and methodological approach demonstrates how in periods of crisis, the state legitimates itself through frames of criminality, political violence and law and order. It works to uncover how although both FOX News and CNN supposedly represent different political ideologies mainstream corporate media functions to maintain the legitimacy of the state and protect the interests of the ruling class. This study will highlight how Black political mobilization and social advancement is imagined as a dangerous extremist, foreign and violent threat to public safety and the wages and property of whiteness. Politicians, state officials and media actors constructed a moral panic of crime and violence during the George Floyd protests to both delegitimize and naturalize the use of state violence as a response. Throughout Fox News and CNN coverage the emphasis on riots and property destruction produced the George Floyd Protests as acts of violence, producing a binary between violent and non-violent protest. This study puts forward a counter-discourse that troubles the binary between violence and non-violent protest and foregrounds riots as part of a radical tradition of Black resistance and as acts of abolitionist world-building.
