Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

After exploring the demographical and cultural background of the Korean-Canadian community, I conclude this group is oppressed through the racial discrimination that pervades Canadian society. For an understanding of Korean-ness and the life conditions faced by Korean-Canadians, I use an autobiographical theological approach, drawing on three major Korean-American theologians: Jung Young Lee, Andrew Sung Park and Hee An Choi. I confirm the racial conflicts faced by Korean-Americans and emphasize the recovery of Korean cultural and spiritual features as a means of finding liberation from oppression. These features include the community-oriented “woori” spirit, which is revealed in the church-oriented Korean-Canadian community. At this point, I draw on Paulo Freire’s pedagogy of conscientization—a most important pedagogical concept for this community—in order that its members might become critically aware of the problems they face, raise their voices, discover or recover their identity as subjects, and identify themselves as possessing equal citizenship. In dialogue with Paulo Freire’s pedagogy, I ultimately propose a Madang-nori pedagogy based on the radical inclusiveness of the Korean woori spirit. I explore the features and concepts of Madang-nori, which is a genre of Korean traditional performances, to see how these concepts can work in combination with Paulo Freire’s pedagogy and how this pedagogy can then become the ideal educational methodology for the racially oppressed and silenced Korean-Canadian community.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
