Preliminary Qualitative Evaluation of the Emotion and Symptom-focused Engagement (EASE) Psychotherapeutic Intervention in Family Caregivers of Children with Acute Leukemia

Abstract
Acute leukemia (AL) is the most common childhood cancer which requires urgent, intensive treatment, often causing significant traumatic stress in family caregivers (FCs). However, limited interventions exist to address FCs’ psychosocial needs. The present study aims to provide a preliminary qualitative evaluation of a novel psychotherapeutic intervention, Emotion and Symptom-focused Engagement (EASE), in FCs of children newly diagnosed with AL. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore FCs’ perceived acceptability of EASE, and sixteen interviews were conducted. Findings revealed high satisfaction with EASE, highlighting its perceived therapeutic impact, such as enhanced connectedness and security, reflective space for difficult thoughts and emotions, empowerment through self-care, and promoting self-awareness and flexible perspectives. FCs perceived the flexible logistics of EASE to enhance its acceptability, though couple-based sessions may not be feasible. These findings indicate the potential of proactive psychotherapeutic interventions for FCs and will guide future refinements and implementation of EASE.
