Au Canada l’espérance de vie augmente mais elle n’équivaut pas nécessairement une espérance de vie en bonne santé. Sachant que seulement 40% des personnes âgée font suffisamment d’activité physique pour se prévaloir des bénéfices de cette habitude de vie, nous voulons comprendre pourquoi en utilisant un sondage en ligne auprès de 1242 personnes âgées sur différents thèmes et nous utilisons des analyses descriptives et des régressions pour identifier de possibles corrélations. L’âgisme internalisé est le meilleur prédicteur du temps consacré à l’activité physique, suivi de la propension à essayer de nouvelles activités et de la représentation d’ainés actifs dans les médias. Les répondants estiment que les modèles utilisés dans les médias ont 60 ans et ils ne perçoivent aucune norme sociale à l’égard de l’activité physique les concernant. Seulement 20% des répondants ont été encouragés à bouger par leur équipe de soin et parmi eux, 34% avaient au moins une condition contraignant l’activité physique. Il est urgent de montrer des aînés de différents âges dans les médias, de cibler cette clientèle par une offre de services diversifiée et d’utiliser l’activité physique plus tôt sur le continuum de soin, en vue de préserver les capacités fonctionnelles de ces personnes.
