Une évaluation indirecte des risques pour la santé humaine a été menée sur quatre lignées de barbus de Sumatra (Puntigrus tetrazona) génétiquement modifiés, connus sous les noms de barbus GloFishMD Electric GreenMD (GB2011), GloFishMD Starfire RedMD (RB2015), GloFishMD Sunburst OrangeMD (OB2019) et GloFishMD Galactic PurpleMD (PB2019), et visés par la Loi canadienne sur la protection de l’environnement (LCPE). Les lignées GB2011, RB2015, OB2019 et PB2019 sont des lignées modifiées de barbus de Sumatra diploïdes, homozygotes ou hémizygotes, dotées de gènes codant pour différentes protéines fluorescentes. Les lignées GB2011, RB2015, OB2019 et PB2019 apparaissent respectivement en vert, rouge, orange ou violet sous la lumière ambiante (y compris la lumière du soleil). Les quatre lignées seront importées des États-Unis pour être utilisées comme poissons d’ornement dans les aquariums domestiques. La présente évaluation des risques portait sur la possibilité que les trois lignées aient des effets nocifs sur les humains au Canada, par rapport aux barbus de Sumatra de type sauvage, en conséquence d’une exposition dans l’environnement, y compris leur utilisation prévue dans les aquariums domestiques. La souche mère, P. tetrazona, est utilisée comme poisson d’aquarium domestique depuis les années 1950 sans qu’aucun effet néfaste sur la santé humaine n’ait été signalé. Rien ne semble indiquer qu’il existe un risque d’effet nocif sur la santé humaine aux niveaux d’exposition prévus pour la population canadienne découlant de l’utilisation des barbus de Sumatra GB2011, RB2015, OB2019 et PB2019 comme poisson d’ornement ou de toute autre utilisation potentielle répertoriée. En tant que tel, rien ne permet de penser que les barbus de Sumatra GB2011, RB2015, OB2019 et PB2019 présentent plus de risques pour la santé humaine que le type sauvage de P. tetrazona.
