Abstract
Ces dernières années, la chasse au jeune phoque gris (Halichoerus grypus) aux Îles-de-la Madeleine, Québec a ciblé l’utilisation de la viande plutôt que celle de la peau. La saignée obligatoire par coupure des artères axillaires et des vaisseaux sanguins adjacents peut risquer d’entraîner la contamination de la viande par les débris sur le sol où ces animaux sont abattus. Cette étude visait à évaluer une méthode alternative de saignée basée sur la coupure des artères carotides communes et vaisseaux sanguins adjacents qui devrait réduire la contamination de la viande normalement récoltée. Le temps de saignée par coupure des artères carotides communes était globalement similaire à celui par coupure des artères axillaires, et ne variait pas entre les sexes ou selon le poids corporel. Les résultats démontrent que l’alternative proposée est au moins aussi efficace que la coupure des artères axillaires du point de vue du bien-être animal et pourrait donc être employée durant la chasse au jeune phoque gris.
