Dans le sud du golfe du Saint-Laurent, le hareng de l’Atlantique est présent du nord de la Gaspésie à l’extrémité nord de l’île du Cap-Breton, territoire comprenant les îles de la Madeleine. Le hareng de l’Atlantique qui y fraie à l’automne est évalué à l’aide de modèles par région (nord, centre et sud). Depuis 2015, on effectue un relevé hydroacoustique chaque année dans six grandes frayères utilisées par les reproducteurs d’automne dans le sud du golfe du Saint-Laurent. Comme des échantillons manquaient, on a recouru à un modèle prédictif de la biomasse nocturne du hareng de l’Atlantique pour obtenir une grille complète de données d’où tirer des indices de biomasse exempts de biais. Les covariables incluses dans le modèle binomial négatif ont permis d’obtenir des données prédictives pour les valeurs manquantes dans les données observées. Les tendances de la biomasse du hareng de l’Atlantique selon ce relevé hydroacoustique correspondent bien aux tendances observées pour d’autres indices de population et estimations d’état des stocks selon le modèle de population. Dans la région du nord, la biomasse a accusé une très forte baisse jusqu’en 2021. Dans la région du centre, la décroissance a semblé plus lente et plus variable d’une année à l’autre. Enfin, dans la région du sud, la tendance à la baisse pourrait s’être inversée; en effet, en 2021, les niveaux de biomasse ont été aussi élevés qu’au début de la série chronologique. La qualité de l’échantillonnage et les biais possibles sont aussi discutés.
