Le Relevé international de la mégafaune marine dans la région du Pacifique (PRISMM), un relevé plurispécifique par transect linéaire réalisé à partir de navires, a été mené entre le 4 juillet et le 5 septembre 2018 pour estimer l’abondance et la répartition des espèces de cétacés dans les eaux canadiennes du Pacifique. Plus de 2 000 observations ont été faites de 20 espèces de mammifères marins sur 8 400 km d’effort. La densité et l’abondance ont été estimées pour neuf espèces à l’aide d’analyses de transects linéaires standard ou d’une modélisation de la surface de densité. Des cartes de la répartition modélisée ont été produites pour les espèces les plus couramment rencontrées (rorqual à bosse, rorqual commun, marsouin de Dall et marsouin commun). Une fois corrigée pour le comportement de plongée, l’abondance a été estimée à 24 300 marsouins de Dall (IC à 95 % : 19 500 à 30 300), 12 200 rorquals à bosse (8 200 à 18 300), 7 400 marsouins communs (3 600 à 15 200), 5 900 dauphins à flancs blancs du Pacifique (2 900 à 11 800), 3 000 rorquals communs (2 200 à 4 000), 2 200 dauphins à dos lisse (730 à 6 700), 920 dauphins de Risso (180 à 4 800), 200 rorquals bleus (59 à 670) et 70 rorquals boréaux (24 à 210). Ces estimations représentent l’abondance des cétacés dans les eaux canadiennes au moment du relevé, mais ne correspondent pas à l’abondance des populations entières, qui sont réparties dans de plus vastes régions du Pacifique.
