Le relevé photographique aérien des côtes effectué en septembre 2022 couvrait tous les sites d’échoueries terrestres connus identifiés dans l’aire de répartition des morses du sud et de l’est de la baie d’Hudson (SEBH), d’après les relevés précédents et l’Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (savoir local). Les dénombrements moyens de morses présents aux échoueries issus du relevé photographique aérien s’élevaient à 130 animaux. L’estimation de l’abondance correspondante (arrondie à la dizaine près) était de 430 (IC à 95 % = 160-1 190) après prise en compte des animaux en mer pendant le relevé. Des images satellites couvrant la majeure partie de la zone étudiée, prises entre août et octobre 2022, ont également été analysées pour obtenir une deuxième estimation de l’abondance. Le nombre moyen de morses présents aux échoueries estimé à partir d’images satellites était de 190, ce qui correspond à une estimation de l’abondance de 630 (IC à 95 % = 230- 1 770) après prise en compte des animaux en mer. L’estimation combinée de l’abondance tirée du relevé aérien et des images satellites est de 500 (IC à 95 % = 230–1 060) morses. Selon l’estimation combinée de l’abondance, l’estimation du prélèvement biologique potentiel (PBP) pour le stock du SEBH est de 4. Le facteur de correction pour les animaux en mer a une grande incidence sur l’estimation de l’abondance, mais il est éclairé par une quantité limitée de données.
