Le maquereau bleu est un poisson fourrage consommé par divers prédateurs, dont les oiseaux de mer, les pinnipèdes, les cétacés, le thon et les poissons de fond. Nous avons évalué l’ordre de grandeur potentiel du nombre total de maquereaux consommés par chacun de ces groupes ainsi que tout changement à cet égard. Il s’agit d’une première étape d’intégration des considérations écosystémiques dans l’évaluation du stock de maquereaux et d’étaiement des hypothèses sur le taux de mortalité naturelle. Nous avons conclu qu’un ensemble de prédateurs est probablement à l’origine des profils globaux de mortalité naturelle et qu’il y a des changements apparents dans la contribution relative de chaque groupe de prédateurs au fil du temps. Bien que la fiabilité des estimations sur la consommation varie d’un prédateur à l’autre, il semble que le taux absolu de prélèvement ait augmenté au fil du temps en dépit d’éventuelles variations interannuelles importantes. Selon la réponse fonctionnelle entre chaque prédateur et la densité du maquereau, cette augmentation pourrait se traduire par une hausse du taux de mortalité naturelle, la biomasse estimée du stock reproducteur étant inférieure ou proche du point de référence limite depuis 2011. L’augmentation probable de la consommation de maquereaux est également inversée par rapport aux changements dans les débarquements. Au cours des 10 dernières années (2012-2021), la quantité de maquereaux consommés par les prédateurs est vraisemblablement devenue au moins deux fois plus élevée que la quantité déclarée de débarquements canadiens (< 11 kt).
