El presente texto tiene como propósito esbozar, desde la filosofía de Peirce y algunos de sus intérpretes, el camino que cabe seguir para la interpretación de obras de arte. Este camino pasa por entender que el objeto de la interpretación es cognoscible, a largo plazo, y que el individuo es incompleto y, en sus errores e ignorancia, abierto a seguir aprendiendo sobre el mundo en términos de la verdad. Aprendizaje que está regulado por la idea de una comunidad indefinida de investigadores e intérpretes en la que, en el futuro, lograría darse la total significación y conocimiento del objeto. El camino de la interpretación de las obras de arte se distribuirá a lo largo de los tres universos de experiencia: el primero, el de la experiencia estética; el segundo, el de la acción y reacción de lo que atrae la atención; y el tercero, el que va desde el representamen hasta un signo más desarrollado. La interpretación, que estrictamente se da en el tercer universo, está regulada por las intenciones y propósitos del artista. Sin embargo, algunos individuos se apartan de esta regulación y se rebelan contra la comunidad, mientras otros trabajan, desde la desconfianza a lo dado, en transformar los límites en fronteras para ampliar el mundo del arte.
