La relación entre el puerto y la ciudad ha sido históricamente un factor determinante en la evolución urbana de muchas ciudades costeras. Para la comprensión de ésta se estudia la evolución general del modelo puerto-ciudad, basándose en diversas teorías como las de Bird, Hoyle, Meyer, Hayuth y Ducruet. A partir de ellas se reconocen patrones comunes, y se comprende cómo esta relación no es lineal, sino que varía mucho a lo largo de los años, teniendo épocas de acercamiento y gran relación entre ciudad y puerto, y otras épocas de distanciamiento, en las que cada parte de la relación evoluciona de manera autónoma. Este marco teórico se aplica al caso de la ciudad de Huelva, a su evolución urbanística desde los primeros asentamientos, hasta día de hoy, para identificar cuáles son los puntos en común con los patrones más repetidos, y cuáles son aquellos puntos que la diferencian del resto, y por tanto, la hacen tan característica. Con el objetivo de comprender la situación actual e identificar las causas de su fragmentación espacial y funcional, se obtiene una visión crítica de los proyectos futuros, que permite repensar el vínculo puerto-ciudad en clave urbana y sostenible.<br />
