Abstract
A growing body of feminist film history research has critically analyzed gender inequalities in film criticism and production in Quebec (Carrière, 1983; Denault, 1997; Lamartine, 2010, Armatage & al., 1991, Marchessault, 1995; Contogouris, Ravary-Pilon, 2022; Saint-Pierre, 2022; Maule, 2023). However, the legacy of feminist video production, and more specifically women’s video collectives, has received far less attention. From the early 1970s, video was considered an “instrument” that was both witness and agent in a dynamic political and cultural moment in Quebec. While early video was a used for multiple purposes across varied contexts, the medium was rapidly taken up by women seeking to forge a creative space apart from the Quebec film industry widely dominated by men at the time (Duguet, 1981; Ross, 1984; Marchessault, 1995; Fleckinger, 2011). This research-creation thesis brings together a creative digital reactivation of the archive of Video Femmes (a women’s video collective established in Quebec City in 1973), with a written thesis. The creative project takes the form of a thematic dossier published on the digital platform of the Cinémathèque Québécoise (CQ) since June 2024. Entitled « Vidéo Femmes: fragments d'un héritage féministe (1973-1993), » the dossier addresses the early years of Vidéo Femmes (VF) through selected archives including video works and excerpts, transcriptions of interviews with the filmmakers, photographs and posters. My research highlights the historical importance of the works produced by Vidéo Femmes (1973-2015), notably the collective’s extensive and little-known catalogue that engages with second wave feminist activism in Quebec and attests to the formal and thematic explorations of early women’s video in Quebec. Developed through a research-creation approach (Sawchuk et Chapman, 2012), this thesis is grounded in oral sources that are set in relation with feminist scholarship and practices of digital archiving (Juhasz, 2006 ; Bociurkiw, 2018 ; Wernimont, 2019). This study contributes to research on the critical potential of feminist cinematic archives, and has the broader ambition of encourage new practices of reflexivity in relation to cultural archives.
