Abstract
This volume consists of the full text of the earliest known published versions of six known and surviving multi-chapter fiction serials by L.M. Montgomery that were published in north American periodicals between 1903 and 1913: "The Running Away of Chester" in The Boys' World (Elgin, illinois), "The Bitterness in the Cup" in The American Home (Waterville, Maine), "Four Winds" and "How We Went to the Wedding" in The Housewife (new York), "By Way of the Brick Oven" in East and West: A Paper for Young Canadians (Toronto), and "Una of the Garden" in The Housekeeper (Minneapolis).Each of these periodicals had its own house style in terms of spelling and punctuation, which i have not attempted to standardize for the sake of consistency across this volume.Copies of five of these six serials are included in Montgomery's scrapbooks, but while i always treat her handwritten corrections as authoritative, she happened not to make any corrections on the surviving copies of these particular texts.Montgomery subsequently republished four of these serials in altered form: "The Bitterness in the Cup" as "Schooled with Briars" in Everywoman's World (Toronto) in 1916; "Four Winds" as "Windy Willows" in the Family Herald and Weekly Star (Montreal) in 1935; "Una of the Garden" as Kilmeny of the Orchard, her third novel, in 1910; and "How We Went to the Wedding" in the Family Herald and Weekly Star in 1935 and again in Girls' Own Paper (London) in 1938.Although the overall plots of these stories are largely unchanged in the revised versions, on three occasions Montgomery rewrote entire scenes to xix
