Le métissage, concept problématique dans la littérature francophone, s’est imposé dans le champ de la critique littéraire à partir des années 90. Cette date correspond à un moment où l’on constate que cette production littéraire s’autonomise des canons esthétiques hexagonaux. Les deux mondes que tout opposait au départ se trouveront liés à jamais dans un jeu complexe dont l’évocation seule rappelle des évènements historiques douloureux : la traite négrière qui allait aboutir à l’esclavage des Noirs dans les Antilles et la colonisation française en Afrique. Dans ce contexte, le métissage littéraire répond, dans bon nombres de discours, à une volonté de l’auteur francophone de rappeler les liens avec l’ancienne puissance tutélaire, sinon de les maintenir. Mais il peut être aussi vu à certains égards comme un moyen de contestation, de protestation contre un ordre établi ; à moins qu’il ne fasse l’objet d’une célébration. Dans tous les cas, le métissage littéraire refait à sa manière l’histoire par l’intermédiaire de la fiction qui place en son cœur le personnage métis et son expression langagière. Le présent projet de thèse s’articule autour de la représentation du métissage chez Abdoulaye Sadji, André Schwarz-Bart et Raphaël Confiant ; il porte sur l’analyse respective de leurs œuvres romanesques : Nini, mulâtresse du Sénégal, La mulâtresse Solitude et Le Nègre et l’Amiral. La diversité et la conflictualité des fonctions attribuées par ces auteurs aux personnages métis répondent à la spécificité géographique, historique et culturelle des sociétés dont ils sont issus. L’idéologie joue également un rôle non négligeable dans ces discours : car c’est l’intrication du politique, du social et du littéraire qui est ici en jeu.
