Between Shallow Deep - A Deep Ecology Assessment of Interface Inc.'s Sustainability Practices
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This thesis examines whether Interface Inc.'s sustainability practices align with deep ecology principles, addressing the gap between corporate environmental initiatives and genuine ecological transformation. Using framework analysis methodology, five deep ecology principles—intrinsic value, biodiversity, vital needs, quality of life, and obligation of action—were operationalized into measurable dimensions and evaluated through a weighted scoring system. Analysis of Interface's sustainability reports and public documentation reveals an overall alignment of 43.6% with deep ecology principles. While Interface demonstrates exceptional performance in operational commitments, the company fails significantly in recognizing nature's intrinsic value and biodiversity preservation. These findings confirm that despite industry-leading sustainability achievements in emissions reduction and circular economy initiatives, Interface remains confined within shallow ecology paradigms. The stark dichotomy between operational excellence and philosophical transformation suggests that meaningful ecological alignment may be structurally impossible within conventional corporate forms operating under capitalism's growth imperative at this point.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
