Abstract
Tekst poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie, co Kanada robi w sferze politycznej i prawnej, by chronić prawa i dziedzictwo językowe ludności rdzennej. Podjęta analiza obejmuje zarówno zapisy dotyczące praw językowych zawarte w konstytucji, ustawach federalnych, jak i w prawach regulujących kwestie językowe w wybranych prowincjach i terytoriach (Ontario, Quebecu, Kolumbii Brytyjskiej, Terytoriach Północno-Zachodnich, Nunavut). Przedmiotem dociekań są także działania i postulaty dot. kwestii językowych wysuwane przez organizacje zrzeszające ludność rdzenną, a także raporty organizacji międzynarodowych. To wszystko – uzupełnione krótką analizą działań podejmowanych na rzecz ochrony języków rdzennych w najbliższym sąsiedztwie Kanady (tj. na Grenlandii oraz w USA – gł. na Alasce) jest podstawą do sformułowania oceny efektywności kanadyjskiej polityki językowej wobec ludności rodzimej, a także na określenie miejsca i roli, jaką zajmują prawa językowe rdzennych mieszkańców w mających przecież długą i burzliwą historię kanadyjskich debatach językowych.
