Always Magnetized by the North : Subconscious Imagination in the Writings of Glenn Gould

Abstract
Canada's North was a unique source of inspiration to the imagination of Glenn Gould(1932-1982). In his startlingly original "contrapuntal" radio documentaries for the CBC, Gould pursued both the landscape and the mindscape of the North. Indeed, Gould titled the first in his signal Solitude Trilogy of radio documentaries "The Idea of North"(1967). The Solitude Trilogy explores the North by way of isolation, nonconformity and detachment. Mediating these values personally, and projecting them onto Canada as a whole(cf. Sherrill E. Grace's "Canada-as-North"), Gould found the anchor for his decision to remain in Canada, after retiring from the turbulence of concert-playing in 1964. In fact, Gould's idea of North went well beyond The Solitude Trilogy, and this paper examines Gould's search for North as a negative, but productive, background, revealing a subconscious correspondence to the fugue process to which Gould was attached, as a "still, desert place" (Albert Schweitzer). The discussion finally uncovers Gould's early idea of North, found in one of his earliest writings. "Address to a Graduation"(1964)reveals the hidden essence of his North, which triangulates with Gould and the Canadian imagination, resulting in a distinctively Northern, Gouldian and Canadian plane.
