Abstract
The dominant weather theme across the state this winter was mild temperatures.Precipitation varied only slightly from normal.Very little snowfall occurred outside the eastern mountains.With the recent split recognizing Cackling Goose as a full species, birders are now forced to look closer at all winter flocks of Canada Geese.This season observers turned up Cackling Geese at three sites in West Tennessee and, more surprisingly, in Sullivan and Washington counties of upper East Tennessee.To my knowledge, all of the Cackling Geese reported this season were of the Richardson's subspecies (hutchinsii), the most expected form in Tennessee since it breeds as far east as the central Canadian Arctic, although the Alaskan-breeding form minima has been reported previously in the state (e.g., Migrant 74:52, 2003).Duck numbers were generally low, but several scoters were found.Boreal irruptives were represented by a few Red-breasted Nuthatches, Purple Finches, and Pine Siskins.Lingering species included Osprey, Sanderling, Common Nighthawk, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (two regions), Yellow-throated Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Summer Tanager, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.A notable late winter concentration of gulls in Lake County held California, Thayer's, and Iceland gulls.Other noteworthy rarities included Northern Goshawk (hvo regions), Allen's Hummingbird, Vermilion Flycatcher, and Snow Bunting.A few early returning swallows in three regions signaled the approach of spring. ad -adult Standard Abbreviations L -LakeCBC -Christmas Bird Count Co -County Cr -Creek ers -earliest reported sighting et al. -and others fide -reported by im -immature 77 m.ob.-many observers max -maximum count
