Abstract: Doel: Het evalueren van de ervaringen van ouders van een neonaat die is opgenomen op de NICU die deelnamen aan een empowering programma. Methode: Ervaringen van ouders werden kwalitatief geëvalueerd wanneer ouders een kind hadden die ernstig prematuur geboren was of een zeer laag geboortegewicht had en opgenomen lag op de NICU. Evaluatiegesprekken vonden plaats van januari 2016 t/m oktober 2017. Resultaten: Totaal warden 46 ouders geïnterviewd. Ouders vonden de NICU opname een zware periode met angstige gevoelens. Toch wisten zij zich snel te hechten aan hun kind dankzij het empowering programma. Een verhoogd empowerment werd bewerkstelligd doordat ouders actief participeerden in de dagelijkse verzorging van hun kind. Echter, ouders hadden de NICU periode nog niet verwerkt zes weken na ontslag en sommige ouders hadden zelfs gezondheidsklachten. Conclusie: Deze studie bevestigt de grote impact van een NICU opname en een positief effect van een empowering programma op ouders.
