La créativité artistique est-elle productive d’innovation sociale dans le fonctionnement des collectifs ? Pour tenter d’y répondre, cette étude porte un regard sociologique sur le mouvement des friches culturelles qui, dès les années 1960, en opposition à une culture dite légitime, envisage les arts dans leur quotidienneté et leur fonction relationnelle. Un tour d’horizon des différentes figures de la friche culturelle permet de clarifier les caractéristiques communes, les évolutions ainsi que les usages en particulier dans leur mode d’organisation selon les contextes sociaux. Ici, la démarche méthodologique s’appuie sur la théorisation ancrée (Glaser, Strauss, 1967 ; Paillé, 1994). L’exploration d’une friche culturelle dans ses formes successives donne matière à une monographie dont l’analyse a impulsé le choix de deux autres terrains d’étude, un tiers-lieu et une fabrique culturelle. Une analyse comparative des trois cas singuliers met en lumière deux récits distincts, celui d’un groupe dont la créativité agit sur son milieu de vie et celui d’un groupe institué autour d’objectifs déterminés. En suivant des acteurs qui s’engagent dans des formes novatrices de relations recherchant le partage des responsabilités, cette étude postule qu’une dynamique intermédiale (Méchoulan, 2003 ; Besson, 2014) de la production artistique agit dans une forme d’échange (producteur/récepteur) de type don/contredon (Mauss, 1925), terreau d’une démarche en-commun (Nicolas-Le Strat, 2016), à la fois source et produit de la gouvernance du groupe (Ostrom, 1990 ; Dardot, Laval 2015).
