Abstract
C’est dans le volume 6 de son Histoire générale du cinéma paru en 1954, le Cinéma pendant la guerre, que Georges Sadoul fit état des premiers résultats du dialogue qu’il avait établi avec différents organismes de conservation audiovisuelle et intellectuels africains, asiatiques et latino-américains sur la base de la position qu’il occupait à la FIAF comme secrétaire général du Bureau International de Recherche sur l’Histoire du Cinéma. C’est dans le cadre des activités du BIRHC que Sadoul rassembla les sources nécessaires à la rédaction de son Histoire du cinéma mondial (1959) où le phénomène des cinémas nationaux est analysé rigoureusement. Cet article montre comment les écrits de Sadoul sur l’histoire du cinéma brésilien éclairent la manière dont il intègre progressivement l’histoire des cinématographies périphériques dans son projet historiographique mondial. Dans le cas brésilien, la découverte (1953), la révision (1957) et la recherche (1960) de l’histoire du cinéma brésilien qu’il a entreprises dans le pays sont liées à la formation et au développement mêmes des recherches historiques de la Cinémathèque brésilienne, dirigée par Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes. À partir de cette approche, il sera possible de montrer comment Sadoul, en dialoguant avec Sales Gomes, a contribué activement à la conception et la légitimation d’un modèle narratif adapté à un pays de dimensions continentales et à l’identification d’une source de tradition pour le cinéma brésilien.
