La terminologie chromatique associée à la teinture en perspective diachronique fournit un cas d’analyse pertinent pour observer l’évolution de formes et de sens dans les vocabulaires spécialisés. Cette étude explore les rapports évolutifs entre concepts et termes de couleur à une période charnière (1750-1836), durant laquelle la teinture amorce sa transition d’un art empirique vers une discipline s’appuyant sur les avancées de la chimie. Elle examine également les enjeux communicatifs et les défis posés par la transmission interculturelle des savoirs techniques à travers le prisme traductif. À partir d’un corpus parallèle (français-italien) constitué de textes spécialisés à visée applicative et/ou didactique, cette étude analyse non seulement les phénomènes de création, variation, obsolescence et disparition, mais aussi de systématisation terminologique. Une attention particulière est portée aux défis que pose la traduction de la terminologie chromatique et aux stratégies adoptées par les traducteurs. Loin d’être de simples transpositions linguistiques, les traductions ont servi de leviers pour échanger des savoirs, diffuser des pratiques inédites et normaliser la terminologie chromatique, à la veille de la transformation industrielle de la teinture.
