Abstract
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli kartoittaa omatoimikirjastojen nykytilannetta ja omatoimisen kirjastopalvelun toimivuutta. Tutkimuksessa pääpainona oli yleiset kirjastot. Tutkimuksella pyrittiin keräämään kirjastoammattilaisten näkemyksiä ja käytännönkokemuksia omatoimikirjastojen käytöstä ja niiden lisäämisestä. Työn aihetta käsiteltiin seuraavien tutkimuskysymysten avulla: omatoimikirjastojen laajentaminen ja käyttäjien palautteet laajentamisesta, häiriköinnin esiintyvyys ja siihen puuttuminen sekä tilojen riittävyys. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin kvantitatiivista menetelmää eli kyseessä oli määrällinen tutkimus. Tutkimuksesta varten luotiin sähköinen kysely, joka lähetettiin Suomen kirjastoammattilaisille 31.5.2023. Kyselyyn saatiin yhteensä 76 vastausta. Numeerinen data vietiin taulukkolaskentaohjelmaan, analysoitiin ja luotiin kuvioita demonstroimaan tuloksia. Mukana oli myös lieviä laadullisen menetelmän elementtejä. Tuloksista tuli ilmi kirjastoammattilaisten positiivinen suhtautuminen omatoimikirjastoon ja omatoimiaikaan. Kirjaston häiriköinti ei ole tahrannut omatoimen imagoa, sillä häiriköintiin puututaan monien tahojen toimesta. Kirjastojen tilat vaativat usein työtä, jotta päästään täysin esteettömiksi. Harvalla oli aikomusta perustaa lisää omatoimikirjastoja kuntaansa, mutta omatoimikirjastojen tulevaisuus on silti myönteinen resurssisäästön ja käyttäjäystävällisyyden myötä.
