Abstract
The article examines the reception of the figure of Prince Vasyl Kostiantyn Ostrozky and of his religious, cultural, and union projects in book culture and polemical literature of the last quarter of the sixteenth and the early seventeenth century. The author analyses a broad corpus of printed texts of diverse origin – from Ostroh publications and panegyrics to Catholic-Uniate polemical works – in which the Prince’s role as a leader of the Orthodox community of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is reflected. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of assessments of Ostrozky in different confessional milieus, the shift in tone from restrained panegyric to sharp criticism after the Union of Brest in 1596, and the use of epistolary sources in polemics. The geography of book production and the intensity of public reflections on the Prince in Ostroh, Kraków, and Vilnius are traced. The study concludes that the reception of Ostrozky’s activity was unprecedented in its synchronic scale and that the Brest cycle of polemical literature played a decisive role in shaping his public image as a protector of the Orthodox Church.
