Abstract
In their book, Lettres parisiennes : Autopsie de l’exil , Anglophone Canadian writer Nancy Huston and Francophone Algerian writer Leila Sebbar exchange letters while living in Paris. The letters, written between 1983-85, are meant to uncover concerns of these two expatriates who have settled in France, and their sense of identity. The translator chose to translate the second and the thirteenth letters in the series, as they portray their trajectories. The two letters explain how the two writers came to live in Paris and write in French. They also present the views of the two writers on life and their analysis of “exile.” They depict their positions on fundamental issues such as the relationship to the Other, their rapport with their children, and the impossibility of going “home.” Despite differences in outlooks and approaches, these letters weave together two lives. The mirroring process creates a unique autobiographical text with two voices.
