Abstract

Cette thèse suit les voyages de la famille Bottineau et leurs descendants de la Rivière Rouge du Nord à la Vallée Chippewa. En examinant les memoirs de la traite des fourrures, les documents des traités, les données du recensement fédéral américain et de plusieurs autres sources, j’essaie de reconstruire leurs vies et leurs relations afin de mieux contextualiser les circonstances dans lesquelles ils ont été racialisés. Une lecture critique de ces sources montre que leurs auteurs ont parfois racialisé la famille Bottineau d’une manière compatible avec les objectifs d’un état colonial en expansion et avec des idées changeantes en concernant le “problème indien.” De plus, la facilité avec laquelle de nombreux membres de la famille Bottineau se sont déplacés et se sont adaptés à des milieux culturels diverses indique que leurs rapports avec le monde social des Métis ne fut pas un remplacement de leurs positions dans le monde social des Anishinaabeg, mais ça fut une addition à celui-ci
