Abstract
From the feminists movements initiated in the 1970s, women’s poetry experienced a paradigm shift and the theme of filiation is thought in a whole new light. It is no longer a matter of choosing between the experience of motherhood and literary or artistic creation but of finding a way to make them coexist which is not always done in harmony. This dissertation intends to reflect the contribution of the specificity and singularity of the maternal experience in contemporary Quebec women’s poetry. To do so, we propose a reading of three collections of poetry that show complex and nuanced representations of motherhood. Whether it’s the maternal ambivalence in Anne-Marie Desmeules’ Le tendon et l’os, the presence of maternal feelings in the absence of children in Vanessa Courville’s Les Miraculeuses or infertility in Éloïse Demers Pinard’s C’est pourquoi meurent les jardins, each poet has her own ruse to reconcile motherhood and creation. The poem’s space becomes performative as it embodies a place of confession and mourning, but also of commemoration. The omnipresence of the we (nous) in our corpus opens up the filiation on alternative models to the vertical or genealogical filiation, as evidenced by the nous-chorus in Desmeules’ poetry, the sororal and literary filiation in Courville's poems and dialogues, the testimony and the praise of friendship in Demers Pinard's documentary-poetry
