Alfred Adler."Guillaume et son cercle dans Raoul de Cambrai."Romania 369(1972)1, 1-19.This insightful, well documented article deals with the rôle occupied by "invisible but present" figures of the Guillaume cycle in Raoul de Cambrai.Professor Adler cites several characters, episodes and attitudes in the assonanced (latter) part of the Raoul poem and, aided by terms borrowed from the structuralist theories of Lévi-Strauss, relates them to similar material found in such epics as Aliscans, La Bataille Loquifer, Les Enfances Vivien and La Chevalerie Vivien.Certain analogies link the characters themselves, e. g., Raoul/Vivien; Guerri/Guillaume; Guerri/Déramé; Béautris/Orable (Guibourc); certain others unite events: the burning of the monastery at Origny and the destruction of the chateau at Lens; the avenging of the death of a cherished nephew (death of Raoul/Vivien avenged by Guerri/Guillaume); yet a third category brings together the attitudes of certain figures: Aalais/Guibourc; Marcent/Guibourc.Professor Adler returns often to the Lévi-Strauss terminology in order to elucidate the diverging results of seemingly similar situations.In Raoul de Cambrai, for example, Guerri finds himself placed between Raoul and Bernier, but he is trop éloigné from the true vocation of chivalry, trop près to local, egotistical sentiments, with the result that "tout se gâte, brûlé, pourri."In the analogous Guillaume episode, on the other hand, Guillaume himself, between Vivien and Rainouart, is au juste milieu and is capable therefore of achieving la cuisine rédemptrice.Although there is no proof that all these Guillaume situations could have been at the disposition of the author of Raoul and that therefore the analogies were consciously drawn, Professor Adler nonetheless suggests that the figures in the latter work seem to be incapable of fashioning themselves on the new socio-political situation of which they are a part and do indeed follow the models of the "exemplary" geste of Guillaume.-o-oOo-o-
