Artykuł koncentruje się na zbadaniu czynników wpływających na poczucie samotności Judy Fawley’a w powieści Thomasa Hardy’ego i w filmie Michaela Winterbottom’a oraz przeanalizowaniu w jaki sposób wymienione czynniki są przedstawione w czterech kluczowych scenach historii. W każdej ze scen zbadany zostanie inny aspekt przeżyć bohatera: osierocenie, niepowodzenia na polu nauki, zmagania w relacjach międzyludzkich i kryzys wiary. Celem artykułu będzie także pokazanie, jak reżyserowi, mimo rozmaitych zmian w fabule, udało się zachować głęboką symbolikę powieści i przenieść ją na ekran. Dzięki tej analizie zostaną uwypuklone różnice i podobieństwa pomiędzy literacką i filmową wersją historii Judy Fawley’a, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobu, w jaki obie wersje ukazują temat samotności w życiu bohatera.
