Dans Les Armoires vides , comme dans Ce qu’ils disent ou rien , premiers romans d’Annie Ernaux, deux topoï thématisant le langage se trouvent intimement mêlés : d’une part le topos de l’apprentissage d’une variété diastratique de langue, le langage standard, et, d’autre part, le topos de la traduction. Si cet entrelacement paraît convenu, dans le cas des narratrices comme de l’autrice, il constitue le moyen de résorber, souvent immédiatement, l’écart qui se creuse inéluctablement entre la langue de l’origine, tantôt rejetée, tantôt regrettée, et la langue acquise lors du passage à l’école, dont il n’est bientôt plus possible de se défaire. Ce double réinvestissement topique donne à lire la violence sociale dans son versant linguistique, tout en rendant compte de l’évolution de la posture de l’autrice. Lorsqu’elle renonce au roman en 1983 et revendique une « écriture plate », le sens de l’apprentissage s’inverse : désormais, c’est la langue d’origine, source, qui est traduite dans la langue standard, cible, telle une invitation, à destination du lectorat, à emprunter le même chemin. Les nombreuses variations autour de ces topoï semblent alors faire signe vers une « résurrection » topique, au-delà même du romanesque.
