Abstract
Closson (1865-1949) est un architecte peu connu, bien qu’il ait travaillé en Égypte, collaborant à l’édification d’une ville complète : Héliopolis. Assistant du renommé académicien Alexandre Marcel, un architecte accoutumé à travailler dans le monde entier, Closson fut l’un des spécialistes occidentaux qui contribuèrent à la modernisation du Caire et de l’Égypte. Comme le peintre Maurice Denis, Closson utilisa autant la photographie que le dessin pour rassembler des matériaux sur les œuvres entreprises. Sa carrière demeure cependant plutôt énigmatique. Après la commande égyptienne il essaya de se faire un nom avec un majestueux projet pour le Champ de Mars à Paris. Parmi ses travaux, on peut trouver un essai (non réalisé) de restauration du château de La Hunaudaye en Bretagne, le mémorial de Dormans, commémorant la bataille de la Marne, l’inachevée basilique Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc à Paris… Étudier Closson permet de découvrir la scène architecturale française dans ses coulisses, en croisant les noms d’artistes plus reconnus tels Louis-Marie Cordonnier, Charles Girault, Paul Tournon, Auguste Perret. Des créateurs méconnus comme Closson révèlent en fait le quotidien de l’architecture, et même sa vie ordinaire loin des feux de la gloire.
