Abstract
the ten books which survive (whole or in part) from the sixteenthI century press of John Siberchat Cambridge, 'perhaps the most significant, though in some respects the most mysterious', according to the late E. P. Goldschmidt, is the Hermathena (S.T.C. 11719), written by one 'Papyrius Geminus Eleates' (as it appears on the title-page and at the end of the volume) of 'Eleatus' (as it is spelled in the dedication at the beginning).1 Henry Bradshaw, who worked out the chronological sequence of Siberch's books (completed by Francis Jenkinson and published in 1886 as a 'Bibliographical Introduction' to the facsimile edition of Henry Bullock's Oratio the earliest of the ten) , has a wistful footnote : ť It would be interesting to know more about Papyrius Geminus.'2 And he adds a statement concerning the one other known occurrence of the name: 'Papyrius Geminus Eliates' (spelled this time with an i) wrote a preface to the anti-Lutheran tract Propugnaculum (S.T.C. 20140), printed by Pynson in 1523. The author of the tract was Edward Powell, canon residentiary of Salisbury, who later refused to take the Oath of Supremacy, and finally was one of the three Catholics to be hanged for treason at Smithfield in 1540. The Hermathena has two dedications, both to Richard Pace, the King's Secretary: one at the beginning dated at London February 1 522, the other at the end ' Comi pridie Nonas Septembr. M.D.XXII'. Pace was in Italy during 1522, manoeuvring to get Cardinal Wolsey elected Pope; Bradshaw accordingly surmises that 'Comi' refers to Como in Italy, and that Pace may have seen Papyrius Geminus there on his way to Rome or Venice.3 Goldschmidt, however, believes that 'Comi' means Coombe (formerly Combe) Bissett (Wilts.); one of the prebends of Salisbury was Combe and Harnham, to which Pace was appointed in 1521/2.4 He suggests further: 'It is a possible hypothesis that Papyrius Geminus was appointed by Pace to the living of Coombe when he obtained the prebend, and that the dedication of the Hermathena may be a gesture of gratitude for the benefice.' Another speculation of Goldschmidt's is that Eleates-Eliates may denote a connexion with the diocese of Ely.
